#11: where would you live?
Good morning,
I’m beginning to think about what daily life (and how we occupy space) in the coming years can look like and I have more questions than answers.
For example: I’m surprised at how few multi-generational family home designs there are in the United States, and how few communities there are that offer the type of diversity (ethnic, economic, political, career, age) and space (nature, safety, public resources) I’d hope my children could experience.
I remember once learning that a truly sustainable community is one that supports the entire human life cycle — you can be born, be educated, grow up, have your health cared for, work, play, socialize, age and pass away within the same community, because there are enough housing types, people to engage with, and public resources for each part of life. The reality, however, is that few places in America are designed to serve human life this well.
In the end, like most people, I’ll probably optimize for a few of these things and work to build the rest. But it probably won’t be the same things the generation before me optimized for or strove to build (good-bye racism + the American dream narrative).
So I want to dream a bit, as I decide and design.
To that end, I have a question for you all today: What are you dreaming of, or enjoying, or reading and thinking about when it comes to the space in which you live?
If you could reply to this email with your brief answer to the following question, I’m happy to share back answers if I get enough :)
If you could dream up your ideal living quarters in your ideal community for the next 30 years of your life, what would it look like?
A) What would the actual living quarters look like? Name a few key features.
B) What would the community look like and offer? Name a few key features.
Also, as always, what should I read and who should I talk to about these questions?
